The Commodity Futures Trading Commission revoked a no-action letter they'd sent to PredictIt in 2014, which had previously allowed the non-profit market to operate without registration. PredictIt is operated by the New Zealand-based Victoria University, and allows people to stake money on the outcomes of real-world political events, mostly in the U.S.
The CFTC announced that they were revoking the letter because "Victoria University has not operated its market in compliance with the terms", though they did not point to any specific infractions. They ordered all remaining positions and contracts be "closed out and/or liquidated" by February 15, 2023, which will be a challenge for bets on things like the winner of the 2024 presidential election (currently predicted by PredictIt users to be Ron DeSantis).
Though the CFTC was not specific in its announcement, Bloomberg reported from sources familiar with the matter that the decision stemmed from PredictIt "stray[ing] too far from the original remit of being a small-scale market designed to facilitate academic research".
This action follows the CFTC's shutdown and $1.4 million fine against Polymarket in January.
